The essential protection for your vehicle

Car insurance is mandatory for all motor vehicle drivers. It combines compulsory and optional coverages.

Depending on the options chosen, insurance can cover some or all of the damage caused to persons and cars in the event of an accident.

Car insurance covers the following risks :

  • Liability insurance
  • Partial accidental damage and Comprehensive insurance
  • Passenger insurance

The programme, which includes Third Party Liability, Partial accidental damage, Comprehensive insurance (collision coverage) and Accident insurance, offers you complete coverage.

A car parked on the public highway must also be insured.

Liability insurance

Every owner of a motor vehicle is required to have car liability insurance. Cover is provided for bodily injury or property damage caused to third parties by the use of the insured motor vehicle, regardless of who was driving the vehicle at the time the damage occurred.

The Road Traffic Act lays down certain minimum guarantees which depend on the type of car.

The injured third party has a direct right against the holder’s insurer, i.e. he does not – as with other liability insurances – have to turn to the person who caused the damage to obtain compensation, but can turn directly to the insurer.

In general, car insurance is offered with comprehensive and occupant insurance, but this is not compulsory.

Partial accidental damage and Comprehensive insurance

All people who absolutely need to be able to dispose of their vehicle, be it to go to work or to exercise their profession, and who do not have the financial means to replace their vehicle (quickly) after an accident need a comprehensive insurance.

There are two types of insurance: partial cover insurance and full cover insurance.
  • Partial insurance covers damage to the vehicle caused by theft, hail/storm, natural forces, glass breakage, fire, snowslides, animals.
  • In addition to the risks covered by the partial cover insurance, collision damage is also covered by the comprehensive or collision insurance. As a rule, only the risk of collision (without the risks of the partial cover insurance) is not possible.

It is the vehicle and not the owner that is insured. It is therefore irrelevant whether the owner or another person was driving the vehicle at the time of the insured event (e.g. collision).

Comprehensive insurance (collision insurance) is governed by a bonus/malus system that varies from company to company. Such a system does not exist in partial cover insurance.

Passenger accident insurance

It is advisable to take out an occupant’s insurance, especially if the owner of the vehicle often travels with people whose accident insurance cover is not known.

Passenger insurance covers personal injury to insured persons caused by an accident while using the insured vehicle. The insurance covers the costs of treatment, a lump sum in the event of disability/death and daily hospitalisation benefits.

The owner/driver and/or passengers can be insured as desired. The sums / capitals insured can be freely chosen.

The great advantage of the passenger’s insurance is that the insurer’s benefits are paid out without the need, for example in the event of a collision, to determine who is responsible for the damage.
